How To Have A FODMAP Friendly Fourth Of July

Americans celebrate Fourth of July (American Independence Day) every year. This day represents the Declaration of Independence and the birth of the United States of America as an independent nation since 1776.

According to a book about the symbolism of the American Flag published in 1977 by the United States House of Representatives:

“The star is a symbol of the heavens and the divine goal to which man has aspired from time immemorial; the stripe is symbolic of the rays of light emanating from the sun”.

On this national holiday, celebrations typically take place outdoors, making most of the pleasant summery weather. Families and relatives gather and watch the ritualistic parade. Politicians and diplomats make speeches about the great heritage of America and the current challenges and developments of the state. Later in the day, families often continue the celebrations by hosting or attending a picnic or barbecue. Fourth of July is concluded by fireworks in the major cities.

If you are following a low FODMAP diet, you too can join in on the festivities.

Here are a few tips for you:

  1. Enjoy your family barbeques by using FODMAP Friendly certified marinades/spices such as Casa de Sante Low FODMAP Spice Mix (Cajun/Creole Seasoning Mix) Onion and Garlic Substitute Seasoning or other low FODMAP alternatives to season your barbeque meat. Avoid marinades containing garlic, onions and other high FODMAP ingredients.

2. If you are planning to make some salads to serve at the gathering, choose low FODMAP vegetables and dressings such as the American classic Live Free Foods Ranch Dressing.

3. For dessert, make your fruit parfaits with Green Valley Organics Lactose-Free Yogurt, strawberries and blueberries.

Top your parfaits with low FODMAP granola by replacing honey with rice malt syrup or maple syrup in the recipe. Alternatively, you could use Casa de Sante Low FODMAP Savoury Granola.

Top tip: Use raspberries, blueberries and plain or vanilla yoghurt, to represent the colours of the American flag!

Wishing you all a happy & safe Fourth of July!
