About FODZYME: How to Enjoy FODMAP Foods Again
The low FODMAP diet is a great, evidence-based way to learn your digestive triggers. But do you need to avoid FODMAPs forever? With FODZYME, the answer thankfully is ‘No.’
What is FODZYME?
FODZYME is a digestive enzyme blend specifically designed to break down the most common FODMAP triggers: fructan, GOS/galactans and lactose. FODZYME contains a novel, proprietary fructan hydrolase— the only enzyme able to target the wide variety of fructans in everyday foods.
FODZYME’s powder format maximizes the amount of enzymes available to break down FODMAP triggers resulting in greater effectiveness compared to pill- or capsule-based enzymes.
FODZYME’s founding story
FODZYME allows for more dietary freedom, making the lives of those with digestive issues more flavorful. Anjie, the co-founder, created FODZYME after struggling with painful gut symptoms for years. Like many patients, she was let down by existing solutions, by food and by her own body.
So she decided to address the problem directly. This led to FODZYME, their unique enzyme blend that allows you to savor every bite without consequences. She initially developed FODZYME for herself because she wanted to eat garlic and onion again… without regretting it the next day.
Target the most common FODMAP triggers
Research continues to show that fructans are one of the most common FODMAP triggers. Anecdotal evidence around how many patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) have trouble tolerating garlic, onion, wheat and Brussels sprouts very much supports this.
Similarly, galactooligosaccharides (galactans/GOS), found in chickpeas, beans, peas and some nuts, are also very likely to cause digestive issues. In a recent study, US patients with IBS who responded well to a low FODMAP diet underwent a blinded, cross-over reintroduction trial of all 5 FODMAP groups. Fructans and GOS were identified as the FODMAPs most associated with worsening abdominal pain and/or bloating.
Elsewhere, research identified fructans and mannitol as the most common FODMAP triggers during reintroduction, triggering symptoms in 56% and 54% of patients, respectively.
Anywhere from 27-72% of patients with IBS experience lactose intolerance. It’s common for high-lactose foods, like ice cream, milk and fresh cheeses, to trigger IBS symptoms.
Who can FODZYME help?
FODZYME is designed to help anyone with a FODMAP intolerance. FODZYME provides peace of mind and dietary freedom to enjoy all the social and cultural pleasures of food. FODZYME offers added protection for those navigating FODMAP sensitivities.
Using FODZYME allows those with FODMAP sensitivities to eat a plant-based, nutrient-rich diet. Peer-reviewed research confirms FODZYME supports short chain fatty acid production when used with a prebiotic-rich, high-fiber foods, like garlic, onion and leek. This suggests FODZYME further supports a healthy gut microbiome.
How to use the FODMAP Friendly app with FODZYME
The FODMAP Friendly app allows you to learn the FODMAP content of foods and recipes.
Once you know the type of FODMAPs in a food, cross-check them with those that FODZYME targets: fructan, GOS/galactans and lactose. If the food is high in any of these three FODMAPs (fructan, GOS, lactose), then FODZYME can help you tolerate it.
FODZYME is a tasteless, fine powder that gets sprinkled directly onto food. The enzymes can be mixed into a dish directly, such as a bowl of pasta or smoothie, or sprinkled onto the first bite and chewed well. Both methods enable FODZYME’s enzymes to make direct contact with the FODMAPs in the food, which is highly important for effective breakdown.
FODZYME begins FODMAP-breakdown as soon as it comes into contact with FODMAPs and is specifically designed to work optimally in low pH (acidic) environments, such as the post-prandial stomach.
How much should be used with each meal?
A single dose of FODZYME provides support against the average FODMAP content in typical meals and is designed based on common tolerance thresholds. Both FODMAP tolerance levels and the amount of FODMAPs in a particular meal or dish vary, so at times you may want to scale up or scale down your dose.
Know that a single dose of FODZYME can break down 3g of fructan (about 6 garlic cloves’ worth!). This means one dose is sufficient for most meals.
FODZYME begins to act as soon as it comes into contact with the food and continues working for up to 30 minutes as the food travels through the digestive tract. For meals that extend beyond that time a second dose is recommended.
Why is FODZYME a powder?
A powder format is core to FODZYME’s increased efficacy when compared to other enzyme forms and products. Mixing enzymes directly into food is the most effective way to deliver over-the-counter carbohydrate-targeting digestive enzymes like FODZYME.
The powder format allows FODZYME to mix well with the food and come into direct contact with the FODMAPs the enzymes are breaking down. With enzymes like FODZYME’s, a pill or capsule does not allow the enzyme to sufficiently and quickly work into the food. Instead, enzymes in pills or capsules can remain localized until they reach the small intestine, whose environment is less favorable for FODMAPs breakdown due to its less acidic (higher pH) environment. Plus, a delay in contact increases the risk that the enzymes are digested before they can act on FODMAPs.
Are there any risks?
FODMAP-targeting enzymes like FODZYME’s are highly specialized proteins that can be metabolized like any other protein. If the enzymes do not come into contact with FODMAPs, they’ll be broken down and naturally excreted by the body. While this is not the intended outcome, it means the enzymes pose little risk.
Those who are only sensitive to fructose and/or polyols do not stand to benefit from FODZYME, as the enzyme blend targets fructan, GOS/galactans and lactose. However, the team is working diligently on a formula that will support polyol tolerance!
