Although a low FODMAP diet may mean many dishes are off the menu, it’s still possible to enjoy a meal out without the unpleasant symptoms.
General tips for ordering low FODMAP:
- Avoid ‘one-pot’ or mixed dishes such as curries, soups, risottos and lasagne as they are often harder to modify to make low FODMAP and most contain onion and/or garlic.
- Good options are meat dishes that come with vegetables or salads, so you can avoid certain foods that cause you to have IBS symptoms. These meals are often easier to modify, for example you can ask to leave off high FODMAP veggies.
- Ask for dressings and sauces on the side. This way if it contains FODMAPs you can just add a very small amount or leave it off altogether.
Don’t be afraid to ask to modify your meal. Most restaurants these days are well aware of dietary requirements and are generally happy to make adjustments to suit customer’s dietary needs. It may even be useful to call the restaurant ahead of time to check what options they have and if they can modify dishes to suit your requirements.
