How did Leggo’s begin?
Our commitment to authentic and simple Italian food dates back to our founder Henry Madren Leggo. In 1882, aged just 13, Henry took a job with a local grocer in the Victorian gold mining town of Bendigo. Outside work, he also sold his mother’s own bottled tomato sauce and pickles direct to the hungry miners in their camps. With an appetite for hard work, 6 years later Henry bought the grocery business and began producing vinegar, pickles, sauces, cordials and other grocery goods based on his mother’s traditional recipes.
Henry’s quest to source only the freshest and best quality ingredients saw Leggo’s tomato sauces awarded Champion gold medals at the Bendigo Show in 1925 – 1926. This pursuit for excellence underpins Leggo’s sauces today.
What is the inspiration behind Leggo’s sauces?
For over 100 years, Leggo’s has helped Australian families to create, share and enjoy simple Italian food. Our Authentic ingredients and recipes have inspired Australian cooks to prepare Italian food their way. This passion for simple, delicious food is one that continues to drive us today.

We wanted to create a delicious Leggo’s pasta sauce, available in your local Woolworths supermarket at regular prices – no ‘health food’ price premium versus regular Leggo’s sauce range. Why did you want to certify Leggo’s Classic Tomato – Chunky Tomato & Herb pasta sauce?
The FODMAP Friendly organisation validate and approve food is low in fermentable FODMAP sugars. The FODMAP Friendly green logo on Leggo’s pasta sauce label allows people following a FODMAP Friendly eating plan to eat & shop with confidence.
What separates your Leggo’s pasta sauce from others available on the market?
Common FODMAP ingredients in pasta sauces are onion & garlic, so low FODMAP sauces are difficult to find in your local supermarket.
