How did your company begin?
Suffering from my own FODMAP malabsorption diagnosis, I struggled to find a healthy granola that didn’t contain oats or honey. I played around with many recipes until I mastered the Original blend. Friends and family were also loving my granola and after a friend suggested I start selling it, I thought why not!?
What is the inspiration behind your range?
My own FODMAP diagnosis and desire to eat a healthy, refined sugar free and nutrient dense breakfast, is the inspiration behind Nourished by Carms granola.
What are your own personal experiences with digestive health?
I have struggled to tolerate dairy for as long as I can remember. Approximately 10 years ago, I was diagnosed with Fructose Malabsorption. Leading up to my diagnosis, I suffered from extreme fatigue and muscle pain. Once I was diagnosed and started to follow a low FODMAP diet, I slowly started to feel better. Within 6 weeks of following a low FODMAP diet, I felt the best I had felt in a long time. I have had relapses, but have learnt the importance of constantly checking foods using the FODMAP Friendly App, as new information is constantly emerging. The high fructose foods or fructans that I suffer the most from are apples, garlic, onion and wheat. This makes eating out so difficult as garlic and onion are often the base ingredients of so many recipes. If I ingest either garlic or onion I feel like I have a hangover for days.
Why did you want to certify your products?
I love my granola and truly believe it is a great product. I understand the difficulty in finding particular foods that are FODMAP friendly, so I wanted to be able to have this product certified so other people can confidently enjoy Nourished by Carms granola as a breakfast or snack option.
What separates your products from others available on the market?
Nourished by Carms granola doesn’t contain oats which is generally a key ingredient in granola. Oats are replaced by quinoa which have a lovely nutty taste.
Are there more products to be added to your range in future?
In the near future I plan to work with FODMAP Friendly to have the Grain Free blend certified, as this is a great breakfast and snack option for people wanting to follow a low carb/high fat or paleo diet. It has been so exciting and rewarding seeing this product being used by Nutritionists.
