How did Noisy Guts Begin?
Noisy Guts Pty Ltd is a spin-out of The University of Western Australia. In 2016, Dr Josephine Muir was employed by Nobel Laureate Professor Barry Marshall as the Associate Director (Business Transformation) of the Marshall Centre for Infectious Diseases at UWA. In this role, Dr Josephine Muir’s challenge was to get great research out of the lab, delivering real world impact. Dr Josephine Muir remained engaged at UWA as an adjunct Research Fellow at the School of Biomedical Sciences.
During her time at the Marshall Centre, Dr Josephine Muir was introduced to co-founder Dr Mary Webberley. Dr Mary Webberley holds a PhD (Ecology and Evolutionary Biology) from the University of Cambridge. Dr Mary Webberley has undertaken specific training in clinical epidemiology, clinical practice and food safety.
Together, Mary and Josephine co-founded Noisy Guts. They are working with UWA to develop a digital diagnostic tool that can be used to accurately diagnose IBS. They expect their tool will help fast track people with gut symptoms to the appropriate investigations or management strategy. The research is being funded by a NHMRC development grant and carried out at UWA. They have received ethics approval to commence data collection.
