Grate it, slice it, cube it – introducing the newly certified Liddells FODMAP Friendly Cheese

Posted on September 01, 2020

Since 1996, Liddells have been Australia’s number one go-to for all that is lactose-free. They offer a range of milks with differing fat content, chocolate milk, cheese varieties and yoghurt of plain, strawberry and vanilla bean flavours.

Liddells believe that no one should have to miss out on the creamy goodness of dairy. Their products are fantastic for anyone who cannot digest lactose but would still like to reap the nutritional benefits of dairy products.

How are Liddells products low in FODMAPs?

The new Liddells cheese range looks, tastes and melts just like regular cheese but without the lactose found in regular dairy products. Lactose is a carbohydrate naturally present in milk. It is also a disaccharide (the ‘d’ in FODMAP) and is commonly malabsorbed sugar in those with IBS. Liddells still use premium dairy, but where necessary they add the lactase enzyme to their products which breaks lactose down into two sugars – glucose and galactose. These sugars are much more easily absorbed in the small intestine and are far less likely to cause gut troubles.

A common misconception of the low FODMAP diet is that dairy products must be completely eliminated. That is not the case! While lactose should be limited, Liddells enables FODMAPPERs to still gain the benefits of including dairy in their diet.

Introducing the Liddells new cheese range

Liddells have introduced two new cheese products to their range – a tasty sliced cheese and grated parmesan cheese. The tasty cheese slices are perfect for sandwiches and can be sliced into salads or melted with bread using a sandwich press. The shredded parmesan cheese is perfect for all Italian dishes – including pasta, pizza and sprinkled on low FODMAP bread. A sprinkle of parmesan cheese over a salad is a delicious way to add creaminess and the goodness of dairy to your meals too.

Dairy products such as cheese are naturally full of important nutrients, such as protein and calcium. A serve of Liddells tasty cheese provides 20% of your recommended daily intake for calcium, while a serve of parmesan cheese contains 30%. Maintaining adequate protein & calcium intake helps maintain good bone density and muscle mass as well as reducing the risk of fractures as you get older. Australian adults should be aiming to pack 2.5 serves of dairy each day according to the Australian Dietary Guidelines. At a taste level, cheese can be a great addition to your vegetables, meats & grains, elevating the flavour of the dish altogether.
